Pierre Monteux, conductor
January 1, 1961

Pierre Monteux: (1875-1964) was one of the pivotal figures in 20th-century music, having led the world premiere performances of such masterpieces as Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps and Petrouchka, and Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe. Born in Paris, Monteux studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatory and went on to play viola with the orchestras of Colonne and the Opera-Comique. It was also in Paris that he founded several performance series, including the Concerts Berlioz (1911) and the Societe des Concerts populaires (1914).

From 1911, Monteux served as conductor of Diaghilev's legendary Ballets Russes, which toured the United States during the 1916-17 season. Other U.S. and European engagements followed, including tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (principal conductor, 1919-1924), the Concertgebouw (associate conductor, 1924-1934), the Orchestra Symphonique de Paris (principal conductor, 1929-1938), the San Francisco Symphony (principal conductor, 1936-1952), among others. Monteux became a U.S. citizen in 1942.

Monteux appeared as guest conductor with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in two separate seasons at Orchestra Hall, first in 1948, and then in 1961 (the season of the present video). He also had strong ties to the Ravinia Festival, where he led the Orchestra in performances every summer between 1941 and 1961 (except 1958).
