1999 U.S. Mint Set GEM BU in Original Mint Packaging
This 1999 United States Mint Set comes with the 20 coins that were minted for circulation in the United States that year. The coins are separated into four pliofilm sleeves, two from the Philadelphia Mint and two from the Denver Mint. One sleeve from each Mint holds the state quarters, which are part of the State Quarters® Program, while the other holds the Kennedy half dollar, the Roosevelt dime, the Jefferson nickel, and the Lincoln penny.
Designs of the coins in this 1999 United States Mint Set
All of the coins in this set, including the quarters, have several commonalities. For one, they all feature the image of a president on the obverse. In most cases, the coins share the name of the president, though in the case of the quarters, they are most often referred to by the image on the reverse rather than as Washington quarters. They also share three inscriptions, “1999,” the year of mintage, “LIBERTY,” and the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” They also have mint marks, “D” for Denver and “P” for Philadelphia.
The non-quarters in the set all bear the same designs as were used in other years around the time. In the case of the penny and nickel, those are buildings, the Lincoln Memorial and Monticello. The dime has a torch, an oak branch, and an olive branch, while the half dollar has an adaptation of the presidential seal.
The state quarter designs are what really make this set unique. The quarters in the program are minted in the order in which states ratified the Constitution, so the state quarters in this set are of the first five: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut.
The Delaware quarter bears the image of Caesar Rodney on horseback and bears the inscription “THE FIRST STATE.” Pennsylvania’s features the Commonwealth statue in front of an outline of the state, along with the state’s motto, “VIRTUE, LIBERTY, INDEPENDENCE.” The New Jersey quarter features George Washington’s famous Crossing of the Delaware. Georgia’s quarter has a peach in the middle of an outline of the state, appropriate for the Peach State. There are also live oak branches on the right and left and a banner with the words “WISDOM JUSTICE MODERATION,” the state motto. “THE CHARTER OAK” is both the inscription and the image used on Connecticut’s quarter.
