The delicious edible fruit of the Red Mulberry, found often
in eastern North America, brings back memories of
childhood, eating handfuls of the over ripe fruit.

The Morus rubra fruits start out almost white,
are red while unripe, but ripen
into a purple black color with slight touches of red.

The trees attract birds, and usually reach heights of
30 to 45 feet, although with rich enough soil they can
get up to 65 feet tall.

Fruit can be eaten fresh or frozen, and should be used
soon after harvest. The low acid ripe fruit is widely
used in pies, tarts, wines and cordials.

Listed as hardy to zone 4, but I would suggest zone
5 and south as safest. In deep southern hot areas, may
require some watering during very hot periods, especially
just before fruiting time.
