More and more women are fronting rock and roll bands these days – thank god – and they don’t sound like your typical Joan Jett ripoff or grrrl band – thank god. The Hells, via London or New York, depending on what timeline or bio you read – are comprised of Ippy (love that name!) from Argentina, who sensually caresses the mic on the majority of the tracks off The Hells’ debut self-titled EP, and Philly Kev from New York, who fingers his guitar neck like a hailstorm hitting the strings in some amazing moment of universal orderly chaos. The lyrics, especially Ippy’s (who claims to know but a slab of English), are simple and sexy, and are thrown around with confidence and attitude, backed by an overall sound that mixes the Stooges, Sonics, The Hells, The Hells, and The Hells. “Do What I Should” could displace your hips from their sockets and “He’s the Devil (But I Love Him So)” will spark your curiosity to no end, as Ippy sings about lusty affairs with all four members of an anonymous rock and roll band. The singer in this rock and roll band doesn’t care for her past, the “gui-ter” player makes her jump in her bed, the bass player makes her ignore her friends, but it’s the drummer who comes home and rips off her dress – lucky guys. Even more curious (for myself) is: would she add a verse for a rock and roll writer who hides his horns under his mod hair, who has made women do all of the above, and who has a tree outside his dungeon, er…house, that strongly resembles a pitchfork? – there’s a void for this somewhere in your collection, I’m sure.
