Research on the effects of Ilex paraguariensis in health and disease has confirmed its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic and lipid-lowering activities. Although we are still waiting for the double-blind, randomized prospective clinical trial, the evidence seems to provide support for beneficial effects of mate drinking on chronic diseases with inflammatory component and lipid metabolism disorders.
Anti-carcinogenic potentialIn vivo and in vitro studies are showing mate to exhibit significant cancer-fighting activity. Researchers at the University of Illinois (2005) found mate to be "rich in phenolic constituents" and to "inhibit oral cancer cell proliferation" while it promoted proliferation of oral cancer cell lines at certain concentrations. This activity was due in part to inhibition of topoisomerase II activity in yeast.
