United States History: The Great Depression:
The Government and the Great Depression:
1929-1934
Author: Charles Hayes.
Summary: By 1932, most Americans blamed
President Hoover for not doing enough to
end the Great Depression. Many bitterly
recalled the assurance of his inaugural
speech, when he promised Americans that
the future was bright. Hoover had said,
Ours is a land rich in resources, blessed
with comfort, and opportunity. I have no
fear for the future of our country.
During the next three years, Hoover
made such statements, but optimistic
words could not cure the nation's ills.
Hoover did not see that new solutions
were needed to overcome the Great
Depression. His failure to do so greatly
damaged his political career, and it
stalled economic recovery for the country.
