The 1975 10¢ Banking & Commerce Stamps were first issued on Wednesday, October 8th, 1975 in New York City, NY (10001), and sold nationwide Oct. 9th. These United States commemorative postage stamps were issued in conjunction with the centennial convention of American Bankers Association. At the ceremony, Postmaster General Benjamin F. Baller gave an address on this program and presented it to the guests, including New York Mayor Abraham D. Bearne. The horizontal gummed adhesives were designed by V. Jack Ruther of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), who had designed the 1972 Osteopathic Medicine stamps (US Scott #1469). The pair shows four early US coins on a background of green lathe shells, which are commonly used in t he borders of currency, stocks and bonds. The coins include an 1875 Indian head penny, a 1875 liberty quarter, a $20 gold double eagle and a Morgan silver dollar. The dates on the last two coins are not shown. Across the bottom of each stamp is typical automated processing numbers which are printed on most checks. The word "BANKING" is on the first stamp and the word "COMMERCE" is on the second. Both stamps carry the denomination "US10¢," the later a reference to the stamps ten-cent face value. These adhesives were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in Washington, D.C with yellow, blue, brown, green and gray inks on white paper and issued in panes (sheets) of 40. The image area is 1.105 by 3.0 inches (or 28.06 by 76.20 mm.), while stamps themselves measure a little more. This se-tenant pair are known to collectors as US Scott Catalogue #1577 (Banking) and US Scott Catalogue #1578 (Commerce).
