BILANGA METEORITE POSTCARD

Offered here is a real photo postcard featuring a thin section of the Bilanga Meteorite under polarized light. Meteorite thin sections are glass slides made for petrology studies with a microscope. They are very thin slices of meteorites that have been polished, usually on both sides, and made thin enough that light can pass through the meteorite's crystalline structures. Viewing a thin section under polarized light you can view the various minerals within it. Since the Bilanga is a Diogenite breccia, it is one of the more colorful thin sections. Measures 5 1/2 inches long and a little over 4 inches wide and limited to 1000 copies.Back of postcard reads: "The Bilanga meteorite is a brecciated diogenite meteorite. Diogenites are fine grained achondrite meteorites with large fragments of thopyroxene. The photo on the front of this postcard shows a thin section of the Bilanga meteorite under polar light. The thopyroxene fragments appear in different colors according on their orientation. Fine grained diopside and silica grains have aligned parallel along some of the fracture surfaces of the thropyroxene fragments (light colored bands). The black round object in the upper right is chromite and/or troilite."

On October 27, 1999 a widely witnessed shower of stones fell in Gomponsago, Burkina Faso, Africa. Some where reported to have fallen in the villages of Bilanga-Yanga and Gomponsago. Classified as a Diogenitic Breccia, one of the rare types of Achondrite Stone Meteorites (meaning a stone meteorite without Chondrules). One of only a handful of known Diogenite Meteorites. The large crystals that make the matrix of this meteorite formed in a cooling magma in the same way as igneous rocks from volcanos here cool and form on the Earth. This meteorite is highly brecciated and has nice tones of ivory, tan and white mixed through. This meteorite, and all Diogenites, are believed to have came from the Asteroid Vesta. One of the largest asteroids in the astroid belt.Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
