Writing is a solitary occupation and by the time you have finished a book length project your focus and perspective can become a little narrowed. It is called tunnel vision and it is one of the reasons that so many good books never see publication.
This is when the services of a good editor can become critical.
An editor goes over your work with a fine toothed comb, reading and re-reading, proofreading grammar and spelling, checking for stylistic problems like repetitive descriptors, cliche's, poor or lazy dialogue and other problems.
A good editor will tell you the truth, gently, about the shortcomings of your work and work hard to accentuate it's strengths.
A good editor will present you with all your options and proposed changes and will correct or ammend your manuscipt in accordance with your wishes.
A good editor provides support for your art and feedback.
So why do you need a good editor?
Because publishing houses can tell the difference between a book that has had no polish or feedback and one that has. And you have a better chance of becoming published when your manuscript is as polished as it can be.
Even if you decide to self publish, be it hard back or ebook, a poorly edited book will sell a few copies before the news of how bad it gets around and kills off sales.
But the best reason to hire an aditor is that the feedback and communication that takes place between you and your editor will act as a catalyst for more creativity and a better end product.
OK, I want you to be my editor. What am I paying for?
You are purchasing my 20+ years experience as a writer that will be applied to your project. I will edit your book length manuscript (up to 200 pages) and provide feedback, creative options, corrections, advanced grammar, spelling and stylistic counseling. I will give you my honest opinion of your work and make constructive suggestions for making your work the best that it can be.
I will provide you with a corrected and edited manuscript in Microsoft Word format (*.doc) or in Rich Text Format (*.rtf) that is ready to use in whatever format you decide.
Are there any limitations?
Yes. I will not tackle a manuscript of more than 200 pages.
I will not do research for your book. You are paying for editing services only.
I will not tackle topics that are illegal.
I cannot publish your work. You can contact a publisher with the finished product to be published, publish it on eBay as an ebook or hire someone to publish it for you.
How do I use your services?
You will pay for the service through paypal and include both your email address and home phone number in the buyer's notes.
I will contact you within 24 hours to discuss the specifics of your book. You will then mail or email your manuscript to me.
How long does this take?
That is hard to say. Most books take at least a month and depending on the complexity of the topic, it can take longer. Three months is about average but by no means an absolute.
