Lawrence Murphy (Forrest Tucker) is a land developer who wants to take control of Lincoln. John Chisum (John Wayne) is a local cattle baron who is determined to stop Murphy. Murphy begins buying all the stores in town and installing his own men as the sheriff and deputies. Chisum fights back by enlisting help from a fellow rancher, Henry Tunstall (Patric Knowles), and some men Tunstall has hired, Billy the Kid (Geoffrey Deuel) and Pat Garrett (Glenn Corbett). Tunstall is killed en route to get help from the territory governor and this further escalates the battle going on in Lincoln and the actions of Billy the Kid and Garrett. Events build up to a huge climatic fight between Chisum and Murphy.
