And just so you know....
Peter's Grill has been a Minneapolis institution for over 94 years! It is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the city.
The restaurant has lived through many of the historical events that have shaped the United States, including the Great Depression, the second World War, and the fall of Communism.
Greek immigrant Peter Atcas came to the United States in 1909, and together with his brother John (who arrived in 1910) opened their first business - a Minneapolis fruit stand in 1914. The original Peter's Grill first opened its doors to customers on 9th Street and Marquette Avenue as a sit-down restaurant. Under Peter's command, the restaurant earned the respect of the community and became a regular dining destination for many of its customers. Peter Atcas died in 1976, and ownership of the restaurant was passed to his son Ed, who continued maintaining the tradition and legacy of the business.
In 1983, Peter's ownership again changed hands, this time to Andy and Peter Atsidakos, nephews of Peter Atcas.
For the cousins it was business as usual - the same menu (including their Uncle's recipe for the restaurant's most famous dish - Green Apple Pie) and key principles - high quality homemade food, outstanding and efficient service at affordable prices.
The restaurant relocated twice during the cousins' tenure. First to the FOSHAY TOWER in 1985, and then to its current location within the BAKER CENTER in 1991. Most of the fixtures, fittings, and decor of the restaurant followed the cousins through their moves. Original pieces still a fixture in the restaurant include the curved counters, counter foot-rests, wooden hat-racks, metal stools, the walnut booths, the round electric clock, the green canopy of servers and cooks from yester-year, and the famous Sandwich counter, located in the middle of the restaurant – reminiscent of the great cafes of the ‘20’s!!
Peter Atsidakos (nephew of Peter Atcas) Is now the owner of Peter's Grill and continues to preserve the heritage unchanged.
