Guarisco This cheeky send-up of "greed is good" thinking provided Oh No, It's Devo! with its other notable single. The lyrics are a tongue-in-cheek exploration of the materialism-driven thinking that drove the 1980s, complete with slogan-style statements like "Ain't it true, there's just no doubt/There's some things that you can't do without/And that's good" and "Everybody's just like you, it's true/Everybody wants a good thing, too." The music drives the lyrics home with metronomic precision by juxtaposing verses that bounce up and down in a hypnotic, singsong fashion with an ever-ascending chorus that gives the song a shot of urgency. Devo's recording represents synth pop at its most catchy, building its foundation on a circular bass synthesizer riff and layering all manner of keyboard flourishes and drum machine fills over the top. The song also gains added layer of satirical wit from the mock-cheery vocals of Mark Mothersbaugh, whose work is bolstered by Gerald Casale's basso profundo backing vocals during the choruses. The end result was catchy and sleek enough to sit comfortably alongside the likes of Duran Duran and Human League, but surprisingly failed to catch on as a single, stalling a few notches shy of the pop chart's Top 100. However, "That's Good" looms large in the memory of new wave fanatics, thanks to a sharp, computer animation-enhanced video that got a bit of rotation on MTV, and the fact that Devo performed the song on the cult sitcom Square Pegs. Real Name: Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald V. Casale, Bob Mothersbaugh, Bob Casale, Josh Freez Profile: New-wave group popular throughout the late 70's and early 80's, formed by a group of art students at Kent State University, principally Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale. Their name comes from the central concept of "de-evolution" - the idea that mankind is devolving instead of evolving, as evidenced by the encroaching gullibility and herd mentality of the American people. After releasing several records on their own Booji Boy label, their work on the short film The Truth About De-Evolution in 1976 got them signed to Warner Brothers, where they had a major hit in 1980 with the single "Whip It". After 1980, their career continuously faded from the public eye until the band called it quits in the early 1990's. However, they reformed for a series of live dates in 2004. Line-up: Mark Mothersbaugh: vocals, keyboards, guitar Gerald V. Casale: vocals, bass, keyboards Bob Mothersbaugh (Bob I): lead guitar, vocals Bob Casale (Bob II): rhythm guitar, keyboards, vocals Jim Mothersbaugh (1974-1976): drums Alan Myers (1976-1985): drums David Kendrick (1986-1990): drums Josh Freez (1995-current): drums This exquisite piece of retro music history is a vinyl sound recording (not a CD).
