Just the two common names of this plant are reasons enough to grow it, :-). From the misty cloud forests of Mexico comes this rare and amazing flowering shrub/tree. Thrives and fast-growing in bright shade, Bartlettina sordida has large, velvety-green, tropical looking leaves that makes it a handsome specimen even without blooms. In mid spring, it produces stalks that rise above the foliage, and burst into the most spectacular, humungous head of purple, fuzzy, lilac-scented flowers. Instantly distinctive and immediate breathtakingly beautiful! Filtered sun or bright shade. Hardy from zone 9 onwards. 15 feet tall, 8 feet wide but can be pruned to be much smaller. Rich, well-drained soil. Regular watering. Rare seeds, harvested 05/2026.
