Description
It took Carson McCullers 20 years to write her last novel, CLOCK WITHOUT HANDS. Set like most of her fiction in a small Southern town, the novel revolves around Judge Fox Clane, an elderly reactionary obsessed with the grandeur of the Old South, and the local pharmacist, J.T. Malone, who is terminally ill and desperately trying to understand who he is. As these two men, and the characters who surround them, struggle to adapt to or fight against the changes that are gradually overtaking their world, McCullers shows us the complex face of racism and explores the limits of conscience. Less immersed in the "Southern Gothic" tradition than her previous novels, CLOCK WITHOUT HANDS is a work of raw realism that concentrates on the subtleties of character.
