Born in Austro-Hungary, Alois Podhajsky was brought up in a country dedicated to long traditions of magnificent horsemanship. After his entry into regimental service in 1922 as an officer's riding instructor, the author's skill in handling horses gained him notice at many riding events.
In 1939, Colonel Podhajsky was entrusted with the direction of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. MY DANCING WHITE HORSES describes vividly the School's chequered fortunes after the Austrian Anschluss and the years of war that followed-when, in spite of official opposition, Colonel Podhajsky led the horses and riders away from the air raids on Vienna to the safety of Upper Austria. It was this escape that inspired Walt Disney's film, Flight of the White Stallions.
After its post-war Festival Tours in Europe and America, the School returned to Vienna, where it continues to be a colorful and integral part of the Austrian cultural tradition. The School's international activities have introduced Colonel Podhajsky to many distinguished personalities, among them Queen Elizabeth, who expressed a keen interest in the School and was allowed to ride one of the prized Lipizzaner stallions.
The story of Colonel Podhajsky's unique career is seasoned with fascinating personal anecdotes and the author's views on horsemanship.
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover and the dust jacket is included. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear. There are light dampstains on the jacket panels and pastedowns; see images.
