Title: Silent Slaughter
Author: Joel Griffiths
Format: Hardcover
Publisher: Henry Regnery Company 1972
LCCN: 72-80926
Size: 6.25 X 9.25 * 228 pages
Synopsis: From the Jacket:
Recent medical research has proven conclusively that exposure over a period of time to even low-level radiation can cause:
• Leukemia in children
• Cancer and sterility in adults
• Congenital defects
• Immediate death if the doses are large enough
This frightening prospect is made even more horrifying by the fact that thousands of Americans are frequently assaulted by x-ray exposure far exceeding safe dosages from a myriad of seemingly harmless sources: television sets (both color and black and white), radium watch dials, microwave ovens, faulty x-ray machines, nuclear power plants, and radioactive fallout, in addition to the usual atmospheric or "background" radiation.
The extent of exposure to x-radiation is virtually uncontrolled: few government regulations have been established to limit dosages and exposure, and those that have been established have not been based on adequate research, cannot be enforced, or are literally ignored.
Who's responsible? In this study Joel Griffiths and Richard Ballantine lay it on the line: manufacturers who knowingly or unwittingly release faulty television sets to consumers; doctors who order unnecessary x-rays; technicians, often inadequately trained and usually unsupervised, who sometimes out of sheer ignorance administer x-ray and radioisotope tests with up to twice the radiation exposure necessary; dentists and chiropractors who buy unsafe used equipment; television repairmen who increase the voltage (and thus the x- ray emission) of television sets to achieve a brighter picture.
This exhaustive study, supported by research, population studies, court records, legal rulings, and major medical findings, reveals just how massive our radiation exposure is. Further, it explains why adequate controls either haven't been established or are not enforced, what the immediate and possible long-term effects are on an unknowing public, and how extensive are the hazards of deadly radiation on Americans, both living and as yet unborn.
Richard Ballantine, a free-lance journalist and resident of New York City, is coauthor of Africa Addio.
Joel Griffiths has contributed articles to The Village Voice, the New York Free Press, and the Manhattan Tribune.
Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition.
