From the Introduction: In 1952 playwright Lillian Hellman was summoned to testify on her putatively un-American activities before the congressional committee charged with maintaining our Americanism. That was the year when Joseph McCarthy, at the top of his power, was re-elected to the Senate; but she did not appear before his Senate committee. She was summoned by a committee of the lower house-the one which, by its power and long life, became the committee of the Cold War period: the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). For roughly a third of this century the Committee brooded over its evergrowing files, testimony, and reports. Its time of greatest power began in 1948, with its "breaking" of the Hiss case. But as early as 1947 it had declared its wide mandate by posing ideological tests for American artifacts, beginning with the movies.
One movie, made in 1944, especially disturbed Committee members. They called for expert testimony on the film from novelist Ayn Rand, and she quickly identified the work's major flaw: it showed Russians smiling. "It is one of the stock propaganda tricks of the Communists, to show these people smiling."

Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear; see images.
