Synopsis: From the jacket: Some places suffer from a bad press, and some places end up no better off because the reader thinks the reporters must be lying. This has been the trouble with the San Juan Basin and the Four Corners country in general journalists have used too many superlatives, and it seems that archaeologists and histo- rians have fallen into the same habit. Great restraint is needed to avoid using too many superlatives.
One salty old timer with a sense of humor is John Arrington of Farmington, New Mexico. He is, with amazing powers of recall, a natural-born story-teller but more than that he has a sense of history and ferret-like tenacity in running down facts which can be ascertained only by painstaking research. Luckily, an able collaborator came along in the person of Eleanor MacDonald. This team covers the subject well, serving up stories that are authentic and yet lose none of their color or excitement. Their book has some rare old pictures, too mere samples of those to be seen in the amazing collection of scarce historical items housed in the John Arrington Museum at Farmington.
PREFACE
This book will not record heroic achievements of the pioneers, except as seen through the eyes of one who intimately knew these people and their human condition, both glorious and frail. He viewed the Western Drama through lenses narrowed to encompass only a county. Isolated from frequent contact with large areas of our United States, that portion of the administrative system of our country formerly functioned with more resourcefulness, more freedom of decision, than is possible today with our larger population and rapid means of transportation and communication.
Once almost a kingdom in itself, that entity, a county, has sadly shrunk in significance and power.

Overall Condition: Very good: The book does not look new and has been read but is in excellent condition. There is no obvious damage to the cover the dust jacket (with minor wear and tear) is included. There are no missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, and no underlining/highlighting of text or writing in the margins. It may have very minimal identifying marks on the inside cover as well as very minimal wear and tear. See images.
