NEW Icelandic leaf bread iron / tool for making traditional Christmas Laufabraud
NEW Icelandic Christmas bread leaf bread iron / tool, laufabrauðsjárn, used to make traditional Icelandic Christmas bread, laufabraud.
Laufabrauð, sometimes also called leaf bread or snowflake bread is a traditional Icelandic bread that is most often eaten in the Christmas season. Originating from northern Iceland but now eaten throughout the country, it consists of round, very thin flat cakes with a diameter of about 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches), decorated with leaf-like, geometric patterns and fried briefly in hot fat or oil.
The intricate patterns are either tediously cut by hand or created using a customized roller, the laufabrauðsjárn, "leaf bread iron". In Iceland there are very few places where you can buy the traditional hand made brass roller, and usually only during the Christmas season. This brass roller is very dear, costing upward of $300 US with tax and shipping. If you've ever looked for this tool, you'll know it's impossible to find in the United States.
The laufabruad tool here is made of food-safe plastic. It operates exactly the same as the brass tool, but is much more affordable.
It is approximately 5-3/8" (17cm) end to end, and the barrel is apx. 7/8" wide and 15/16" in diameter.
Laufabraud was featured on the Great British Baking Show Christmas 2019 episode seen here:
