About Scarab:

Scarab is a type of dung beetle common to North Africa that became an important symbol to the ancient Egyptians.

In the formative stages of their religion, ancient Egyptians associated traits of certain creatures in their environment with gods that represented the essential powers of the universe. For them, the image of the beetle rolling up a ball of dung for the nourishment of its young became an analogy for the great solar orb that passed across the sky during the day and provided warmth and light, requisite for all life. In their mythological conception, a giant beetle pushed the Sun and made its celestial trip possible. The symbol of the beetle also was part of the repertoire of hieroglyphic signs, and it represented the sounds kheper, meaning �to come into being, to be created or manifest.� The god associated with the Sun as it rises in the morning is depicted as a beetle or as a human with a beetle for its head, and his name is Khepri.

The Egyptians also created three-dimensional scarab figurines from a variety of materials, including different types of stone, wood, and faience (a style of glazed earthenware). These range in size, and some include a decorative design or a name and title on the underside. Some are without any decoration, and some have commemorative messages, such as the fairly large examples produced during the reign of Amenhotep III. Others include spell 30 from the Book of the Dead and were part of the funerary equipment used to ensure that the heart of the deceased would respond appropriately at the final judgment.
