Prunus subhirtella, commonly called Higan cherry, is a medium sized deciduous tree, growing to 40-50' tall. It is a beautiful small tree originating from Japan. It features white to pink flowers in early spring for 2 weeks, turning to small black fruit. The tree prefers moist and well-drained soil but can tolerate summer heat and winter cold. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate green, making it an attractive landscape tree. Higan cherry is resistant to most diseases. Its flowers are often used as indoor decorations, and the leaves have some garden value for their autumn color. This tree is perfect for adding a burst of color to your garden and providing shelter for birds.
