Also known as Opuntia imbricata, this unusual and very spiny cactus has slender cylindrical joints with tubercles forming a diamond pattern ("chain link"). Small shrubby tree to 3 - 10 feet, with stunning 3" wide rose like flowers that display in bright shades of magenta followed by yellow 1 1/2" fruits. Hardy to Zone 6-11. Some say it grows in zone 5. Showy specimen cactus.
The dried "arms" are cleaned, boiled and then used for crafts or in terrariums.
