"HANDSOME TERRY WALLACE LIVED IN THE TWILIGHT OF SEX BETWEEN THE DAYLIGHT OF NORMAL LOVE AND THE NIGHT OF FORBIDDEN DESIRE!
SYNOPSIS
"Endowed with a magnificent body and stunning good looks, Terry Wallace wanted the fame and glamour of being a star. He found it as a female impersonator. Eventually stardom brought him into contact with many unusual men, and he discovered his strange talent to appease physical and spiritual hunger with all of them. But each new thrill only made Terry painfully aware of the emptiness of his life of abnormal passion.
The hundreds of thousands of readers who were spellbound by Jay Little's previous novel MAYBE -TOMORROW will find SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE TWO an even more shattering adventure in sheer fascination."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jay Little was one of the most influential gay writers of the 20th century. His two novels, Maybe-Tomorrow and Somewhere Between the Two, both self-published in the 50s under a pseudonym by a vanity press, were surprising bestsellers. One source estimates he sold over 200,000 copies, and this at a time when "deviant"-themed books were widely censored, if not banned.
Little's work was groundbreaking in its exploration of gay identity and sexuality. His novels were the first to offer an honest and unflinching in their portrayal of gay life, and they offered hope and affirmation to a generation of gay men who felt isolated and marginalized. They also broke down stereotypes and pave the way for a more open and accepting society.
ABOUT THE PUBLISHER
Paperback Library was outstanding for the consistently good quality of the gay books they published. They were located right on Park Avenue in NYC and also published Quatrefoil (the most famous gay book of its time) in paperback. Paperback Library's books were not really salacious or sleazy.
The back of the book featured three pages of ads for Paperback Library's other titles of interest to gay men. The ads were carefully crafted and visually appealing, effectively conveying to their gay audience which of their other books would be of interest. Their marketing approach was exceptional and highly professional, embodying the sophistication of New York City's mainstream culture.
The cover is very typical of the covers that Paperback Library had been making for their gay books. The photo of two guys is very 1950's film noir! And that was the consistent look of these covers, until 1967---the year of the Summer of Love when paperback Library finally caught up with the times and got very psychedelic with their covers. The B&W covers were so famous that Ian Young gave them a two-page spread in his colorful book, Out In Paperback. Their covers are also shown on pages 47, 56, & 156 in The Golden Age of Gay Fiction. The titles were always in yellow (and using the same plain font) and some of the cover text was always in white. The backgrounds were always black & in this case in stark shadow. The photo on the back is a bit different from the front cover photo, which is something they did regularly & I find it very appealing. In the back photo, the faces are shown more closeup.
Paperback Library's gay book covers were so iconic that they got copied (a lot). An example is The Gay Year by M de F, published in 1967 by Lancer Books. Another example is Butterfly Man, published in 1967 by Award Books. However, the lettering on that book is quite psychedelic, as befits a "Summer of Love" book. I believe the original inspiration for the cover style was City of Night by John Rechy.
Cover Photograph posed by professional models.
