Sabal palmetto is a fast-growing palm native to the southeastern United States (especially Florida, Carolina) or even the Bahamas and Cuba. It is a slow-growing palm during the first years, but which then accelerates in climates with sufficiently hot summers, reaching a size of the order of 10 to 20 m in height with age. It is an ornamental palm, with a solitary stipe and a fairly dense crown of leaves.
The leaves are evergreen, costapalmate, glaucous-green to bluish-green in color and up to about 1.5 m wide. The leaf crown is quite dense and is composed at maturity of 10-30 leaves depending on the growing conditions in particular.
Flowering, annual, predominantly white, occurs in the leaf axils. S. palmetto is a monoecious palm.
The 1 cm fruits are rounded, dark brown to black, and are edible with mealy flesh.
