Eucomis bicolor, the pineapple flower, is a bulbous plant native to South Africa. It forms a rosette of leaves from which emerges in summer a fleshy stem bearing a flower in a tight spike. The flower is surmounted by a plume giving it the appearance of a small pineapple.
This bulbous plant is interesting for its original appearance and hardiness. In well-drained soil, and with a light mulch, the strain can withstand frosts of around -12°C.
The leaves of the pineapple flower are deciduous, basal, ribbon-like and arranged in a rosette. In addition, they are light green in color, often flecked with purple at the base.
Flowering: from July until October. The flowers are pale green and white, with a few bright pink tips. The flowers have a high longevity (2-3 months) in place.
Height: 40 to 60 cm.
