SENSATIONAL ! MID CENTURY TRANSFORMER LAMP Rare & Coveted "Squiggle" Design Shade ! Circa. 1958 Base : 4 3/4 " Wide Shade : 3 " Long Fully Extended : 20 " High In the late fifties the transformer lamp was developed. It permitted voltage to be adjusted by a switch and allowed for hi-intensity lamps to be created which had two settings. These lamps invariably were small and built like tanks. Because a lot of illumination could be generated by a small bulb this type of lamp went on to dominate the office lamps and small reading lamps sold during the sixties. They appeared in all sorts of compact ways, emphasizing their small size. Here we have a very early example of the transformer style lamp. It still features "squiggle" styling and is enameled in white and gold - both trending for 1958. This lamp represents the end of one era and the birth of another. No lamp better illustrates this change that occurred in the 1958-1962 period as pure modernism was being made obsolete and furniture makers were returning to the prewar mindset of furniture that was would be acceptable to the unsophisticated buyers that never could accept (or afford) modern designs. The squiggle didn't belong to the transformer era - it belonged to the postwar futurist era. Seeing it and this conical shade, illustrates that the designers of this lamp still embraced the purist modern school of design. This lamp is in very good condition and works perfectly. Enameled shade and brass articulating neck show very minor age wear. Small socket uses two way bulbs. Switch on base turns lamp on then when turned again puts it to high-intensity and then again switches it off.
