MONUMENTAL! ANTONI CLAVE LITHOGRAPH ON WOOD! MID CENTURY VINTAGE PIECE GORGEOUS ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH ON WOOD! ( DIMENSIONS: 35" x 27" ) Antoni Clave is a mid century contemporary of Pablo Picasso. He was born in Spain but moved to France during the revolution where he befriended Pablo Picasso and was influenced by his style. This work, Fegura A Caballo shows a young boy on a rocking horse and dates to the late forties. This lithograph on wood was made when the image was at the peak of its popularity about 1951-53 and is a magnificent setting for an Antoni Clave work and is exceptionally rare in this state. Clave's works from this period all revolve around a clash between childhood and innocence. They celebrate childhood but also manage to evoke thoughtful retrospection because his figures are not exuberant or wildly happy, but are thoughtful and almost contemplative. Some felt Clave was melancholic when he painted these works of puppet like children, clowns and harlequins and that he longed for a simpler time and others argued the work tore away the fantasy of childhood and made it more real. Picasso's influence was strong at this point and time and one sees this influence in the overall composition. Clave's own style is still unmistakable in the face and the gentler, thoughtful tone of this work which appeared at around the same time as his L'Enfant au Chat. Clave's later works would become ever more abstract and collector's adore this period in which he expressed artistically on universal themes which with everyone could relate, making this vintage lithograph extremely coveted. A spectacular mid century work of art! With great history and depth. Mid century Clave prints on wood are rarer than hen's teeth! Good condition. Typical wear to the original paint and cloth border. The lithograph on wood presents a great third dimension and the grey-blue is absolutely a perfect accent for this work.
