This young singer-songwriter's obviously got a lot to live up to, and it's to his credit that he doesn't try to be anything other than himself. His debut album is an eclectic affair in which the connecting thread is Lennon's natural, unique harmonic and melodic gift. INTO THE SUN was produced by his girlfriend Yuka Honda, keyboardist for Cibo Matto, whose influence can be heard in the off-kilter analog synth sounds that color many of the tunes, and in the cut-and-paste editing style that connects one song to another.
Though the lyrics, many inspired by Lennon's relationship with Honda, are almost uniformly optimistic and sunny, the stylistic swath he cuts is wide. The title cut is a gentle, Jobim-inspired bossa nova. "Part One of the Cowboy Trilogy" has a jokey Country feel. "Photosynthesis" is a funky jazz instrumental. For those in search of Beatles influences, there's the jaunty, Mellotron-driven "Queue" and the infectious, DOUBLE FANTASY-ish pure pop of "Two Fine Lovers." Rest assured however, that Sean Lennon is his own man, and INTO THE SUN is a promising first artistic step.

If there's no concrete proof that this particular New York 20-something would've been discovered on his own merits, rather than via his Beatles or even Beasties connestions...[INTO THE SUN] at least points to that possibility.

...a willfully small-scale work that has more in common with indie-rock miniaturists like East River Pipe and Smog than with anything John or Julian ever created....INTO THE SUN is all lemon-meringue pop, light and frothy, down to Lennon's disarming, unaffected voice... - Rating: B
