The cultivar, ‘Barbara Jackman’ is a deciduous climber belonging to AHS group 2. Large, 4 inch wide single flowers are borne on sideshoots growing from last year’s shoots in spring. Additional blooms are borne through the rest of summer on the tips of the present year’s growth.
Leaves are divided into 3 widely or regularly lance-shaped leaflets, 4 to 6 inches long. Beautiful along fences and arbors. Part shade is preferable.
Choose the planting site for your climber carefully: its long flexible stems may need some shelter, but planting right next to a wall might keep it from the sun or water it needs. Make sure that there's room for the climber to grow when it gets tall, and remember that it will grow towards the sun unless carefully trained.
Bred by the famous Jackman family nursery in England this nearly 100 year old cultivar remains outstanding against its peers. Good purple-blue with magenta bar. Flowers 5-7″ (12-18cm) in May, June and Sept. Mature height 6-9′ (2-3m).
Barbara Jackman clematis is a deciduous woody vine that bears many flowers early in the season. From late spring to early summer, large lavender flowers striped with dark magenta appear along twining stems covered with medium green leaves. This clematis grows best in sites with full sun and fertile, well drained soil.
