Housed beneath 2,000 feet of granite, the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center (CMOS) is strategically located in the Rocky Mountains near the center of the North American continent. Established in 1966, the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center is a joint operation of the American and Canadian governments and serves the air defense needs of both nations. It is composed of approximately 1,100 military and civilian employees. Considered the world’s most sophisticated and elaborate communications and intelligence command center, the CMOC is the nerve center for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Charged with detecting, tracking, and eliminating airborne threats to America’s security, the CMOC plays a pivotal role in the nation’ defense. This coin salutes the highly skilled and dedicated employees of the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center for their outstanding service to one of the world’s most unique military installations. The obverse contains the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center emblem. The reverse bears the official symbol of the U.S. Air Force. Minted in a brass alloy, this coin is imbued with colorful enamel on both sides. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that describes the mission and history of the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center.
