Presents photographs of men who are now identifiable with Jack Pierson's vision of masculine beauty. The book is made up entirely of portraits. There are no props or elaborate setups. There is no text. There are no installation or graphic works thrown in. The collection's focus is on the men, with an intense emphasis on their underwear. The men are beautiful; there are closeups of their handsome faces as well as sexually inviting poses. Still, the book is about Pierson's fetishistic obsession with their underwear: The colors, shapes, sizes, bulges, the way they are worn, how skimpy, sexy and revealing they are, and most brilliantly, their smell. Photography is a flat medium, focussed on sight, but when it is pursued with this kind of single-mindedness, a fragrance, not just an aura, begins to pervade. All fantasies, like memories, are evoked by the sense of smell. Many viewers will be fantasizing over these men. Pierson has photographed hundreds of men in the course of his restless, peripatetic travels. They are not fashion-model types and in the photographs of Brad Pitt, Casper van Dien and Val Kilmer, it is clear that Pierson sees even the most celebrated sex symbols of our time in his own very personal way. The men are good-looking but of the type that "grows" on you and needs to be discovered underneath the greasy hair, shabby clothes and indifferent attitude. The more dangerous they look, the more the viewer is drawn to rather than repelled by them.
