Growing up in a secluded valley in the Cumberlands, Rachel McCoy had read just enough books to give her a taste for the outside world. She wanted to go to school in that world, but her childhood sweetheart, reckless, volatile, Clem May, objected strongly. Then Jamison Tucker came to her valley to open a coal mine and to bring unexpected change to the valley and its people —and to Rachel.
Clem despised Jamison from the first, and Rachel's family did not trust him. Nonetheless, Rachel fell in love with him. Jamison’s uncivilized behavior and Clem’s ungovernable temper brought them close to violence. In an effort to escape the conflict, Rachel went to Lexington, Kentucky and entered school. There she met Cherry, whose tragic past caused her to become involved in Rachel ’s problems, and to eventually fall in love with Rachel ’s older brother, Jeb.
Trouble over the coal mine brought the valley people to the brink of a civil war. Shots were fired and Clem was wounded. His stay in the hospital caused Rachel to reexamine her feelings toward him. The strong love of Rachel’s family helps her to work through her problems to the exciting and unexpected conclusion of the story.
