Sorana beans ( Fagiolo di Sorana ) are a type of cannellini bean that grows along the Pescia river, Sorana city, Pistoia Province in Tuscany , Italy . Sorana bean cultivation is limited to a very small microclimate area because it is considered good for growing this bean. The low production of Sorana beans and high demand in the market cause the price to be six to ten times that of other cannellini beans. In 2002, Sorana beans were awarded the European Union Geographical Status Protection certification. This is considered important for agricultural and economic viability in the Pescia Valley as it is believed the certification can prevent emigration from the area.
