"RETREAT HELL!
"The seventy-five-mile road from Chosin to Hungnam is a road made for ambush, and in the cold November of 1950 it led the American First Marine Division into a trap. The division's men had joined in the general assault to the Yalu River, which General Douglas MacArthur proposed to put a quick and early end to the Korean conflict. But coming down to meet them, to gird them in a ring of steel and ice, were two new enemies: the Communist Chinese and the Korean cold.
"What followed wasn't a retreat, according to Marine commanders; it was "attack in another direction" - perhaps the most perfect division operation in military history. Chinese casualties were five times those suffered by the Americans, and when the Marines finally fought their way out, it was through the shambles of an entire Chinese army."
