When mature, the stems can reach 7.5 centimeters in diameter, and grow as long as 2.5 meters long. The stems are rigid for a few feet at the base and then start their characteristic droop.
Bright red flowers may be as long as 3″ inches. The flowers of the Monkey Tail cactus transition into reddish, spherical seeds that germinate easily.
