The Ice Cream bean tree grows very quickly, usually fruiting within three years of germination. It typically reaches heights of 17 meters and develops a broad spreading canopy, ideal for shading other crops and landscaping.
The tree usually blossoms twice a year. Within the Inga genus there are around 300 species, most of them native and growing in the Amazon forest region although some species are also found in Mexico, Greater and Lesser Antilles and other countries in South America, being an exclusively neotropical genus.
Inga is an extremely fast-growing tree, native to the Americas, that tends to reach about 9 meters (30 feet) even in low-quality soil. Its large leaves provide excellent shade, which prevents weeds and competing grasses from moving in on crops.
