According to Greek mythology, Adonis was a handsome young man who was loved by Aphrodite. He was killed by a wild boar and his blood is said to produce the red flowers of this species. Makes a delightful plant for the border. These days, it is hard to find due to herbicide use and can only be found in a few locations. It was introduced as a medicinal herb by Dr. Bubnow (1879).
It is an annual wildflower, so it blooms in the first year and reseeds itself. All Zones. In some locations, it grows as a perennial.
