Letter From The Commissioner:
DEAR BASEBALL FAN, You now have in your possession what I believe to be Baseball's Finest and Most Complete Record Book. It is particularly fitting that the book is published In Professional Baseball's Centennial Year for it enables us to look back at all the men who ever played the game, or managed for that matter. It helps us all to relive the glories of past seasons and past performances.
It helps us to get to know the Oldtimers and how they played as well as to appreciate the performances of our current favorites.
This Book brings to light many fascinating new measures of performance, which are fully explained in the text.
Some of those new measures, such as pitchers' won and lost records before 1920 and batters' extra base totals before 1900, involve departures from past scoring procedures and therefore need further review before Baseball can accept them as final and official. However, these changes will intrigue the careful reader as they are an endeavor to apply more contemporary scoring concepts to the pre-1920 period.
Because I feel that Baseball's records are an essential ingredient of the game, I have appointed a permanent Baseball Records Committee. This Committee will continue to review changes in scoring procedures which have made it difficult to credit individuals and teams with their proper records before 1920. The Committee will also be looking at some of Baseball's long-standing records and from time to time will make rulings which may affect certain information in this book. Future editions will reflect any decisions which the Committee makes.
I am sure that you and I will find this book an endless source of enjoyment and fascination as we move together into Baseball's second and most exciting hundred years. Signed, Bowie K. Kuhn.
