Welo or Wello Opals are one of the newest additions to the opal family, only discovered in 2008 near the town of Wegel Tena in the Wollo Province of Ethiopia. They are internationally known for their often vivid play-of-color or ‘fire’.
They are usually light in colour and the high grade opals display mesmerizing, at times, almost neon flashes of fire. As beautiful as these opals are, they are very temperamental and require special care and handling. Opal has long been the birthstone for October. The value of opals is on the rise, so get this now.
Spinel is a late addition to the modern birthstone lists. In 2016, the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America replaced sardonyx with spinel as a birthstone for August.
