Drama and derring-do are stylishly combined in this fast-paced tale by M.L. Miller and perfectly interpreted in Daniele Friedlich's superb illustrations. A story that can be read and enjoyed on many levels, it tells of Theo, an orphan lad unjustly imprisoned by a cruel duke in a country somewhat resembling England in the time of Dickens. Starving and desperate, Theo picks the lock of his miserable cell and escapes into the forest, where his prison garb of elm tree brown allows him to blend with the trees and so elude capture by the duke's fierce Dragoons.
Now the ancient magic of the forest came to his aid, and all might have ended happily there and then, had Theo been willing to forget past injustices and forgive the duke. But Theo wanted revenge.
How Theo repents, reforms, and is finally re-accepted by the forest is a fascinating, adventurous story. Mr. Miller's spirited telling balances neatly on the fine line between wit and satire. Ms. Friedrich's romantic illustrations perfectly portray the characters and recreate the atmosphere of the period. Together they have created a memorable and distinguished book - one that will linger long in the minds of readers young and old.
