In this book about the exciting adventures of four boys off the coast of Maine, the terms of the sailorman have been freely used; indeed Len, Ted, Am and later Nat Mason, are genuine sailors and know the arts and skills of sailing, seamanship and navigating and this is their adventure.
So that the reader, too, will know and understand these things, there are many simple drawings scattered throughout the text. Theses, together with parts of the story itself, form an easy reference for those readers who wish to know more about sailing and the sea.
