Wisteria floribunda var macrobotrys, 4 seeds
Wisterias are hardy, deciduous, twining perennial vines grown in many great grand estates. While all varieties of Wisteria are gorgeous and elegant, some are more breathtaking than others. For examples, the white, the pink, this extra long Japanese variety and the seedless (regrettably!) double forms. In full bloom, this plant is sensational. The hanging clusters of violet-purple, fragrant blooms are not your normal 6 to 12 inches, but at least 2 feet long, and more often than not, 3 1/2 feet. Each individual flower is not tightly packed along the racemes, giving it a wispy look. Best viewed when trained onto a pergola where the extremely long trusses can drape down. Yet at the same time equally dramatic if trained into a tree form with the magnificient racemes growing from branches at different levels so that a 'layered' effect is created. Own a few plants like this and your gardens immediately become a picture haven. Many folks looking to shoot wedding pictures will be asking you for permission to take some in your gardens, :-). Hardy from zone 5 onwards. 30 feet or more tall but can be kept small by pruning. Full sun for sensational blooms. Any soil type, and in fact, flowers better when not fertilized and kept moderately moist. Very rare but easy-to-germinate seeds, harvested 11/2011.
