Lights & Shadows: A Memoir
Just a schoolboy when the Nazi Party rose to power in 1933, Arnold Fleischmann and his family weathered seven years of Nazi cruelties until they immigrated to the United States in 1940 and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. When he turned 18, Arnold enlisted in the US Army to return to his home country, this time determined to defeat the regime which pushed his family out of the country. Participating in the Battle of the Bulge and acting as a translator for the US Army, Arnold and his fellow GI's carved their way into Germany until one day, in 1945, a nearly twenty year old Arnold stood silently outside his old boyhood home remembering his childhood there and how much his life had changed. An excellent memoir about Arnold's experiences as a Jewish Immigrant serving in the US Army, the book explores Arnold's life from his boyhood to post-war occupation of Germany. Written by himself.
