The Fifth Seal by Mark Aldanov (1943) (R34c8) Charles Scribner's Sons HC
The Fifth Seal is probably the most mature, as well as the most civilized, novel that has been written in Russian during the last two decades. Entirely fresh in its approach, instead of picturing the Soviet hierarchy through Western eyes, it presents a panorama of the modern world as seen through the eyes of Soviet officials. The setting is Western Europe on the eve of the Second World War, but the chief characters are members of a Soviet Embassy staff and the people with whom they come in contact in the course of their duties. There are plots and intrigues, clashes of personalities and smoldering violence, as well as brilliant flashes of satire such as only an accomplished writer can create. Among the leading characters are the ambassador who made a career of the Revolution, his wife to whom all diplomatic functions were merely a projection of her theatrical career, a man who had spent his entire life fighting under revolutionary banners only to find himself at odds with the new powers that be, a french writer who wanted to be a revolutionary without sacrificing his comforts, a naive Young girl who had never known anything except Soviet society until she was sent on a mission abroad, and a stalwart, professional soldier who had served in the armies of the Czar and who continued to serve Russia in the Red Army. Every line, every situation in the book reflects the author's deep consciousness of the stream of history, which, somehow, never becomes impersonal and never interferes with is acute knowledge of the individual. Whether Mr. Aldanov is writing about a palace reception, or whether he is re-creating an exciting murder scene and munhunt, he endows every human gesture and reaction with the quality of life
