10 Native Unicorn Plant Devils Claw Proboscidea Seeds
Proboscidea parviflora is a species of flowering plant in the family Martyniaceae known by the common names doubleclaw and red devil's-claw. It is native to the desert southwest of the United States and northern Mexico, where it grows in sandy, dry, and disturbed habitat and blooms during the hot summer. This is an annual herb growing from a taproot and producing sprawling, spreading stems. The flower is white to pink or purple. Its gorgeous foxglove-like flowers will soon become edible green pods that look like okra crossed with the curved and pointed shoes of Santa's elves. As those pods harden and become inedible, the pointed end elongates and eventually splits down the middle, coming to resemble two brown elephant tusks pointing toward each other, each with a sharp barb at its end. These tusks are made of a strong black fiber that has long been used in Native American basketry. The dry pods are also full of edible and nutritious seeds, which taste like a delicious combination of sunflower seeds and pine nuts. 10 Seeds
