The Illustrated Longitude by Dava Sobel and William J.H. Andrewes HB

Longitude was written by Dava Sobel in 1995 becoming an international best seller even though it had no illustrations. She decided that illustrations would make the book even better and worked with William Andrewes who provided 178 images from maps, diagrams and photographs of scientific instruments. The Illustrated Longitude contains the entire original narrative of Longitude and redesigned to include all the wonderful images. This is a beautiful book and an interesting read about the epic quest to solve the scientific problem of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to solve of measuring the longitude for navigating the oceans. Not your normal science book and great for the coffee table.
