Its versatility made it a well-renowned American war bird that played different roles- photo reconnaissance, dive and level bombing, and ground strafing. What is formidable about the Lightning P-38, however, is its armament installed entirely into its nose, providing the pilot an attack "cone" with pinpoint accuracy. It is more dangerously accurate when compared to the conventional wing-mounted armament common at the time. Ultimately, the Lightning P-38 would become the symbol of Lockheed's first successful foray into military aviation design.
