Astragalus crassicarpus, known as ground plum or buffalo plum, is a perennial species of flowering plant in the legume family, Fabaceae, native to North America.
The thick fleshy unripe seedpods, which resemble plums, can be eaten raw, cooked, or pickled. Its fruit tastes like a sweet pea and they were eaten by the original inhabitants of the prairie. The roots have medicinal value.
The species grows 1 to 2 feet tall with pinkish purple flowers and thick taproots with several long hairy stems laying on the ground. Ground plums grow in sunny drained soil. Zones 3-8. In addition to being a favorite of bees, Astragalus species are one of the host plants of the Clouded Sulphur butterfly.
