Holman has generously excerpted from Look Homeward Angel, Of Time and the River. From Death to Morning. The Web and the Rock, You Can't Go Home Again, and The Hills Beyond in an attempt to crystallize the central themes pervading all of Thomas Wolfe's literary endeavors loneliness, death, the American experience -- and to substantiate his own thesis that ""the works after Look Homeward Angel are seemingly portions of one vast but unfinished 'book'"". Holman's anthology represents Wolfe in his most significant moods, manners and moments to get to the quintessence of a unity which can only be seen when one looks at the separate novels as pairs of a sprawling, voluminous whole. The excerpts are presented in book order and the books appear in order of their initial publication so that the reader is able to follow Wolfe's development. A scholarly and well done anthology digested for the sake of lucidity rather than laxity.
