"This is the story of young Tom Briggs. He comes from a small, midwestern town to New York where his father has been offered a job. Tom, a leader at home, feels rejected in the big city school where he had dreamed of being a basketball star until Ludi Lucano, a domineering, magnetic Italian boy, discovers that Tom is a good speaker. He takes Tom to his 'club' and gets him on the basketball team.

Tom goes to the clubhouse regularly and soon becomes very active in all its projects. Gradually he takes on the feelings and beliefs of the members without realizing that the 'club' is a front for a Communist Youth organization. Attractive, elusive Karen Graham, whom he admires, warns him of the trap into which he is falling, but it takes a near-tragedy involving Karen for Tom to realize what is happening and come to terms with it."
